Scriptures to read:

Matthew 18:1-20; Numbers 5-6; Ecclesiastes 5

In today’s readings I was specifically drawn to the correlation between Matthew 18:2-4 and Ecclesiastes 5:10-11. Both of these passages reflect on humbling ourselves, whether it be becoming like a child or recognizing that our earthly treasures are meaningless.

When the disciples ask Jesus in Matthew 18, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?”, He responds that unless we change and become like little children, we will never enter the kingdom of heaven. We must take a lowly position of a child. In Ecclesiastes 5 we read that whoever loves money never has enough and their wealth is never satisfied. It is meaningless.

Two different methods of humility are presented here. Church, I challenge you to humble yourself in the ways God is calling you. Do you need to take the lowly position of a child? Do you need to reevaluate where your meaning lies in your earthly treasures?

We, especially as Christians in America, are blessed beyond measure. We are rich in the world’s standards. Are we humbling ourselves? Are we recognizing that we have blessings and riches that many do not? When we do recognize that, what are we doing about it? Are we using our blessings to serve others? Does the world see us as humble?

These are questions to sit on today. Take time with God and ask Him to reveal areas in your life that could use more humility. He is a great, powerful, and gracious God and will grant you those things.

Memory Verse: Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. - Matthew 18:4-5

Prayer: Lord, we come to you with humble hearts. Reveal to us where we could use more humility. How can we be more like little children? Show us our many blessings and help us to use those blessings to serve and love others. Amen.
