Leading A Community Group

God uses ordinary people to create spaces where others can grow, belong, and encounter Him. At New North, Community Groups (CG's) are the heartbeat of our church and this fall, we’re looking for leaders who are ready to say yes to our mission of making and maturing more followers of Christ in authentic community. This may be ambitious, but God is doing a new thing in our church and we're praying for Him to stir up and call leaders or co-leaders so we can create TEN new community groups for the September 2025-May 2026 season!

We asked a few of our seasoned Community Group Leaders why they serve.

Todd and Joyce Mamiya currently lead a CG made up of mostly families with newborns to parents with school-aged children. "We wanted to create a space where families could grow in faith together—not just the adults, but our kids too. It can be hard for parents to find community, especially in the middle of busy family life. This is especially true for those that are serving.  We wanted to feed our little community spiritually and physically.  That inspired us to step up and lead. We’ve been meeting for about 3 years, and it’s become something we genuinely look forward to."

"We’ve seen God move in the way people have opened up and supported one another through work/ministry challenges, parenting ups and downs, and everyday life. There’s something powerful about knowing you’re not alone in your walk—especially when raising kids in today’s world. We’ve seen prayers answered, friendships deepen, and even our kids forming sweet albeit capricious bonds with one another."

Any advice for those considering leading a group?

"If you’re waiting until life is less chaotic or until you feel more “qualified,” don’t. God works through ordinary people in ordinary seasons—especially the messy ones. Leading a group has been stretching at times, but incredibly life-giving. If you’re willing to open your home or your heart, God will do the rest. You’ll grow alongside others in ways you never expected. With that being said, please also be sure to over communicate with those that support you to ensure you maintain a healthy relationship while you serve."

Rose and Daniel Chiu have lead their CG since 2022, "we have a very diverse group of Christians comprising of singles and married with and without children. They range from the 40s to the 70s. The study material has led us to share authentically and pray deeply for one another. We've seen God mend broken relationships, get us through health challenges, career decisions and things of spirital nature."

The Chiu's became CG leaders when their previous leaders moved. "Although teaching isn't really our gift, the timing was right because we were both in the process of retiring and wanted to serve more, so we decided to go for it especially since it was the group we've been in. Our group has since grown to 15 members!  They have been so encouraging to us with their words of affirmation, showing up even when they are tired, and especially sharing and praying deeply for each other.

Any advice for those considering leading a group?

"If you've either been asked or feel led to be a CG leader, I would encourage you to inquire further.  Maybe speak to a current leader to find out what the responsibilities are, how much time it takes, etc.  Also be realistic about your commitment and the time you have available. Definitely pray about it, but if it's the right decision, you'll feel at peace about it. It can be hard work and will take time, but the rewards are greater."
