Scriptures to read:

Matthew 6:1-18; Exodus 33:1-34:35; Proverbs 15

We like to be seen, recognized, heralded even for our ‘good’ deeds. We live in a time where we post our proudest moments on Facebook, Instagram and even NextDoor. Yet, God reminds us that we should do our good deeds in secret. God knows that my ego enjoys the accolades and gushing compliments that inflate my pride. Perhaps this is the very danger God wants me to avoid. In Matthew 6:3, Jesus tells us “..do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” The act of giving is meant to grow your relationship with God not to be heralded by others.

When I shared with my secular friends that our church was beginning a capital campaign, they all advised me that we needed to publish “leadership circles” in order to recognize large donors. That it was the only way to get people to make big gifts. They were surprised when I shared that our church will not do this, because this is the principle Jesus speaks about in Matthew 6. “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in Heaven.” We follow Jesus who wanted us to give in humility with gratitude. And a God that sees all of our actions. In Proverbs 15:3 it says, “The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.”

Memory Verse: This is how you should pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. - Matthew 6:9-13
