This Sunday, Pastor Rob continued looking at the Holy Spirit’s work through our prayers. He stated that we can struggle to pray because we don’t know how to pray well when life hurts. Praise God that we are not alone in praying during sorrow!

This Sunday, Pastor Rob continued looking at the Holy Spirit’s work through our prayers. He stated that we can struggle to pray because we don’t know how to pray well when life hurts. Praise God that we are not alone in praying during sorrow!

Warm up:

  • Each person’s sorrow is distinctive and profound.  Recall a time when life really hurt.  How did you try to pray about it?

Reflect on the Message:

  • Rob developed the idea that the Holy Spirit leads us into truth about Jesus.  Rob stated that this truth isn’t only facts in a sense but is deeply personal.  What does that mean to you?
  • A little later, Rob stated that the Holy Spirit never competes with Scripture.  What does this statement mean?

Scripture Engagement:

  • Read John 16:5-22.
  • In verse 20 Jesus says, “You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.”  Certainly this experience was true for the old timey apostles, but in what way is Jesus promise also true for you and me?

Personal Connection:

  • Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as being not only our Helper and Advocate, but also our Comforter and one who will reveal our desperate need for Jesus’ Presence and activity in our lives. In which of these roles would you like the Spirit to become more involved in your life?

Practical Application:

  • Rob ended his sermon by referring to the hard work of seeking Jesus in the hidden place—that in such prayer sometimes joy comes.  When and where will you seek Jesus in private this week?
  • The Holy Spirit assists us in living faithfully; what’s a way that you have found to rely on Him?  Your victory may inspire someone else in your group to trust Him in new ways.
