On Sunday, we celebrated baptisms and kicked off our series “A Praying Life” with Guest Pastor Mark McGovern from Experience Church. He revealed how the radiance of Jesus’ joy and glory reforms and revitalizes our lives from being merely people who pray into being men and women of prayer. He shared his vision of forming ten 24/7 prayer rooms across the Bay Area to transform our region into the most prayed for region in America. Jesus, the shining one, is our prayer leader in heaven.
Describe the most joyful person you know. Who is he or she? What is it like to be in his or her presence?
Pastor Mark presented Adam—and by extension, all of us—as being engineered and designed to be close to God. In His Presence we have meaning and purpose. In this view, John Piper says, “The chief end of man is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever.”
- When have you experienced glorifying God by enjoying Him?
- What obstacles arise in glorifying God by enjoying Him?
Read Psalm 80:3. “Restore us, O God; make Your face shine upon us, that we might be saved.” What might the Psalmist mean by asking God to make His face shine upon us?
Read Hebrews 7:25. “Consequently, Jesus is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him since He always lives to make intercession for them.” Pastor Mark proclaimed that day and night Jesus has been praying for you and for me, without us even being aware of it. How could this perspective transform how we conduct our times of prayer?
Isaiah 56:7 says, “These I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer.” One of our greatest forms of witness is our source of joy in Jesus, which we can tap into during prayer. As you share prayer requests and intercede for each other tonight, also ask that the joy with which Jesus wants to infuse you would fill your being and radiate to those you meet this week.
