This Sunday, Pastor Rob Hall kicked off our new series, Come Holy Spirit, by introducing us to the person of the Holy Spirit through John 14:15-27. The Holy Spirit is not just a force—He is a person who helps us know and follow Jesus. If you are a Christian, His presence already dwells in you. But to live with power and purpose, we must be filled and refilled with the Spirit daily.

This week, take time to get to know the Holy Spirit by reading the following passages:

>>The Holy Spirit is a person

  • The Holy Spirit has will
    • The Holy Spirit makes decisions (1 Cor. 12:11)
    • The Holy Spirit leads and directs (Acts 16:6-7)
    • The Holy Spirit intercedes and prays for us (Rom. 8:26)
  • The Holy Spirit also has intellect
    • The Spirit teaches us (John 14:26)
    • The Spirit searches and knows the deep things of God (1 Cor. 2:10-11)
    • The Spirit guides us into all truth (John 16:13)
  • The Holy Spirit has emotions
    • The Spirit can be grieved, only a person can feel sorrow (Eph. 4:30)
    • The Spirit loves personally and wants to be with us relationally (Rom. 15:30)
    • The Spirit comforts us because he cares for us (Acts 9:31)
  • The Holy Spirit also relates to us personally
    • He can speak to us (Acts 13:2)
    • He can be lied to (Acts 5:3)
    • He has fellowship with believers (2 Cor. 13:14) meaning he meets with us
  • The Holy Spirit is God
    • As the third person of the Trinity he is equated with the Father and the Son (Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14)
    • He shares their divine attributes: he’s omniscience (1 Cor. 2:10-11), omnipresent (Ps. 139:7), and is eternal in nature (Heb. 9:14)

>>The Holy Spirit is our Advocate and Helper

  • The Spirit is our advocate and helper who lives in us. (John 14:15-17)

>>The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth

  • The Spirit reveals God’s truth to us, He always points us to Jesus — the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).
  • The Spirit illuminates Scripture, and one of the roles of the Spirit is to help us understand, apply, and live it out (1 Cor. 2:12-14).
  • The Spirit teaches us (reminds us)

>>The Holy Spirit reveals the presence and power of Jesus in us

  • We can do all God’s called us to do and greater things than even Jesus did! (John 14:12)
  • The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in us, right now (Romans 8:11) (John 14:18-20)
