Generosity Unmasked: Sowing or Showing

Title

Generosity Unmasked: Sowing or Showing

Series

Acts 4:32-35 - 5:1-11

Speaker

Lee Coate

What do Acts 4–5 teach us about generosity, hypocrisy, and the heart behind our giving? On Sunday, Pastor Lee Coate unpacked the stories of Barnabas, Ananias, and Sapphira to explore what authentic generosity looks like through three scenes: a field, a seed, and a basket. While our human nature often leads us to give for recognition, God calls us to something greater: sowing instead of showing. It's not just about what we give, but why we give. When we surrender what we have to God, even our smallest offerings can become something far greater in His hands.

‍CG Sermon Discussion Questions

1. Warm-up

  • Looking back ten years, what is one habit, decision, or investment that you are grateful for today? Flip it forward: what is one choice you hope your "+10 year" self will thank you for?

2. Reflect on the Message

  • In Acts 4–5, both Barnabas and Ananias sold fields, but only one had pure motives. Pastor Lee pointed out that "showing needs an audience; sowing just needs soil." Why is it so easy to slip into seeking approval, affirmation, or recognition when doing good things?

3. Scripture Engagement — Read 2 Corinthians 9:6–11

  • Verse 10 promises that God will supply and increase our store of seed. In your own life, how have you seen God faithfully provide when you chose to invest your time, gifts, or finances into others?

4. Personal Connection

  • Pastor Lee mentioned that when we’re tired or stressed, we easily get stuck in "Me Mode." What are the signs in your own life that tell you you've shifted into "Me Mode," and what usually helps pull you out of it?

5. Practical Application

  • Your "five loaves" might be your time, a skill, encouragement, an intentional relationship, or financial generosity. Where is an area this week where God might be nudging you to shift from "holding tight" to offering what you have to Him?

Group Prayer Time

  • Pray together asking God for open hands—to release the desire for human applause, to trust Him as the ultimate provider, and to faithfully sow whatever He places in your hands.
