What if success in God's eyes looks different from the life we're trying to build? This weekend, Pastor Rob walked us through Acts 6-7 and the story of Stephen, whose faithfulness to Jesus cost him his life. The Holy Spirit empowered Stephen to serve like Jesus, speak about Jesus, and suffer like Jesus. His story challenges us to rethink what truly matters and ask the Holy Spirit to make us more like Jesus.
Pastor Rob said your resume never comes up at a funeral, just one describing sentence in an obituary. What is one quality or way of treating people that you hope others remember about you? What is a quality you would speak about the person to your right in remembrance?
God sees us as his messengers. Stephen was first chosen to help care for widows who were being overlooked, then the Holy Spirit empowered Stephen to make a powerful turn, to be a witness and direct all towards Jesus. Describe a time or moment when you had a strong feeling, or as Rob says, you felt "nudged" & perhaps something similar to what we imagine Stephen was feeling?
Read Acts 6:10 and Acts 7:54–58.
Stephen listened, spoke with wisdom, and pointed people to Jesus, even when the conversation became costly. What makes it difficult to speak clearly about Jesus? How might listening well help you respond appropriately and allow the Holy Spirit to guide your engagement with care and courage? Don't forget its ok, to say: "You know, I don't have the answer to that, but let's figure it out together."
Read Acts 7:59–60.
Even as he was being killed, Stephen entrusted himself to Jesus and prayed for his attackers. When you are hurt or misunderstood, what helps you trust that Jesus is present? What could extending grace and surrendering look like in a situation you are facing?
Stephen’s faithfulness may have affected people he never knew were watching. We don’t always see or know whose watching us and how our faithfulness will impact us years later. Where might the Holy Spirit be prompting you this week to serve someone, speak about Jesus, or respond with grace? What is one habit you can form when no one is looking?
Ask the Holy Spirit to help your group serve people who are overlooked, listen and speak about Jesus with courage, and keep trusting Jesus through suffering. Pray for the grace to become more like him.
